Abstruct Architects renovate a stone house in Litochoro balancing heritage preservation and modern living

At the foothills of Mount Olympus, Abstruct Architects have artfully revived a two-story residence dating back to the previous century. The team undertook the task of revitalizing this historic gem, committed to preserving the essence of Macedonian architecture while infusing it with a contemporary spirit. The primary objective of the renovation was clear: to transform the aged structure into a modern dwelling while safeguarding the memories of its previous owners and upholding the historical integrity of the location. Upon entering the residence, visitors are greeted by an impressive staircase adorned with metal decorative elements, leading to the heart of the home—the kitchen. From there, the layout seamlessly directs inhabitants to the mezzanine, where the living and dining areas unfold, and further to the upper floor, housing the bedrooms. The upper level maintains the original hall space with numerous openings and a “built-in” sitting area, creating a cohesive connection between the three bedrooms and the bathroom. A pivotal element of historical residences—the courtyard—has been preserved and expanded into the former laundry area and its terrace.  Local stone masonry adorns the building shell, harmonizing with wooden frames, copper gutters, and mint-colored accents, respecting the historical ambiance. Inside, original features like wooden floors, aged tiles, and an impressive marble fireplace have been meticulously preserved. The architects’ touch has seamlessly intertwined the past and present, creating a unified whole that honors the building’s rich history.
