That Studio redesigns a 1938 Athenian apartment to meet modern living needs

Located on the first floor of a 1938 two-story building on Galinou Street, That Studio has transformed an 82-square-meter apartment into a light-filled, contemporary home designed to accommodate a family of three. The apartment, with its own independent entrance, small street-facing balcony, and direct rooftop access, seamlessly integrates historical character with modern living. The original layout—comprising separate living, dining, and kitchen spaces—was reimagined, uniting these areas into an open-plan living space. The kitchen, positioned at the heart of the apartment, acts as a functional divider between the living and sleeping areas, featuring opposite counters for double circulation. A recessed cooktop cleverly conceals the cooking area, keeping sightlines open. The 3.5-meter ceiling height and abundant natural light enhance the apartment’s sense of spaciousness. New windows, light wells, and translucent partitions bring daylight even to windowless rooms, creating an ever-changing ambiance throughout the day. That Studio carefully balanced preservation with modern updates. Original wooden floors and interior doors were retained, while new elements like colorful metal frames and light ceramic tiles add contemporary contrast. Neutral white walls in the main living area highlight varied textures, colorful millwork and metal partitions, while bold hues in other rooms change dynamically with the light.
