ao architects breathe life into an 1850s neoclassical gem in Plaka

In the heart of downtown Athens, a two-storey listed building on Tripodon Street in Plaka was revived, preserving the architectural legacy of the mid-19th century. This neoclassical building, spanning a total area of 225.13 sqm, has stood the test of time since its construction before 1858. AO Architects took on the task of transforming it into a modern residence, navigating the balance between keeping historical integrity and meeting contemporary living standards. The result is a harmonious blend of heritage and functionality, turning the building into two independent houses. The ground floor welcomes visitors through a narrow corridor with ornate decorations, leading to an inner courtyard. The first house, with a living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom, reflects a thoughtful mix of modern comfort and historical elegance. The original marble fountain and an ornate staircase, adorned with marble and metal elements, grace the left side of the courtyard, leading to the second house on the upper floor. Upstairs, an L-shaped wooden loggia connects four bedrooms on one side and a living room, kitchen, and bathroom on the other. Throughout, painted decorations pay homage to the building’s original splendor. Beyond aesthetics, AO Architects emphasizes the importance of preserving local culture and memory.
