Detale Architecture & Engineering restores house in Kardamyli bringing life back to a 60s dilapidated structure

Centrally located in the village of Kardamyli, “Tou Panou” is a restoration project commissioned to breathe new life into a dilapidated house. Originally constructed in the 60s, the two-storey building had fallen into a state of near ruin until Detale Architecture & Engineering team was asked to transform it into a contemporary holiday house. The architects connected the two levels with a central internal staircase and reconfigured the plans, creating linked but independent units that bring back functionality and natural light. The main entrance is now central and opens up to the solid oak and concrete internal staircase. All floors, internal walls and networks were rebuilt and a limewash was chosen to make the space feel bright and airy. The ground level comprises three ensuite bedrooms and a dressing room leading to the master. The kitchen was relocated to the upper floor, designed as an open-plan space that connects with the living room. An office and bathroom also reside on this level. An outdoor dining space was created with built-in bench seating and a solid iroko table. As the architects describe, “Here a pergola shields you from the sun as you sit here and gaze upon the Taygetos Mountain peak”. External lighting and cobblestone floors were used to unify the outdoor spaces. The balcony can also be reached by an old staircase featuring original stone elements.
