House for a musician in Athens by Theo Poulakos and Manos Botsaris

Architect Theo Poulakos and Civil Engineer Manos Botsaris have transformed an old two-bedroom apartment near the center of Athens into the home of a young musician and his daughter. The design aim and main element of the project were to allow natural light to flood the interiors and warm up every piece and every corner of the space. The creative duo imagined a bright open space that includes pocket areas with different functions.

Entering the flat, a new diagonal axis has been revealed, where light guides the design and circulation of the space. The music room, the kitchen, the dining, and the living area refer altogether to that bright diagonal axis. For the music room, a new semi-transparent box with curtains on the inside was created. Light passes through the entrance area giving the impression that the glass cube almost disappears. At the same time, the room becomes a fully closed and protected area when curtains are closed, ideal for studying music in privacy.

The kitchen area, which is now facing the center of the house, enjoys its own space while remaining fully connected to the living room area. An extra window in the facade completes the unification of materials and allows movement throughout the space. To keep the apartment light and create continuity between rooms, a monochromatic color palette, and a minimalistic aesthetic were chosen. A grey kitchen, a music room with semi-transparent glass walls, wooden details, and a blue curtain as well as the dark blue bathroom create different entities, while the white walls, white ceilings, and the light grey epoxied floor contribute to a balanced composition.
