Phenomenon returns to Anafi to weave together the island’s history with the vibrancy of contemporary art

From June 24 to July 7, 2024, Anafi Island will transform into a hub for contemporary art. The Phenomenon Association and the Kerenidis Pepe Collection present the fifth edition of Phenomenon. This international art program features a mix of artist residencies, public events and an inspiring exhibition spread across the island. The theme for Phenomenon 5 is “Re-turning,” inspired by philosopher Karen Barad’s idea that “Re-turning is a troubling matter, a matter of troubling.” Instead of simply looking back at the past, this theme encourages people to rethink and reshape their reality. Anafi, with its rich history from ancient myths to modern migrations, provides the perfect backdrop for this exploration. The public program, running from June 24 to June 30, includes free lectures, performances, video screenings and more. These events lead up to the main art exhibition, which opens on June 29 and continues until July 7. The exhibition will turn Anafi into an open-air gallery, blending art with the island’s natural beauty. Celebrating ten years of artistic exploration, Phenomenon 5 revisits its origins and the diverse history of Anafi. The island’s narrative is built with threads from antiquity, through its role as a place of exile in the interwar period, to its current identity marked by seasonal migration. Each edition of Phenomenon has sought to unravel these complex histories, offering fresh perspectives on how collective and personal memories are constructed and understood. This year’s edition emphasizes the importance of collaboration and understanding through art. It invites visitors to re-examine their histories and find new ways to connect with each other.
