Hydra’s Old Carpet Factory transforms into a canvas of history and art with ‘The Warp of Time’ exhibition

From June 16 to September 8, 2024, ‘The Warp of Time’ exhibition transforms a historic mansion, once a bustling carpet-weaving hub, into a living dialogue between past and present. Curated by Ekaterina Juskowski, the visionary behind the Art Residency at the Old Carpet Factory, The Warp of Time marks a hundred years since the establishment of the Soutzoglou Carpets factory. This exhibition invites visitors to delve into a non-linear journey through memory and history, exploring how these elements intertwine and influence our perception of place. Central to the exhibition is the Old Carpet Factory itself—a relic of Hydra’s storied past. The title, The Warp of Time, evokes the intricate and often complex interplay between the threads of memory and history. As visitors navigate through the curated spaces, they are invited to contemplate the fluid boundaries between what is remembered, forgotten and imagined. A centerpiece of the exhibition is an antique carpet woven a century ago by the Soutzoglou family, juxtaposed with fresh creations from renowned artists Helen Marden and Dimitrios Antonitsis. Marden’s vivid watercolors, inspired by Hydra’s landscapes, are transformed into hand-woven carpets by Soutzoglou artisans, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern art. Antonitsis’ “loom-abacuses” further challenge the boundaries between textile and sculpture.

Opening week features daily viewings from June 16-21 and a literary pop-up event with Mnemosyne Projects on June 16. Post-opening, the exhibition is by appointment only.
