In her collage work, Lane uses colorful and different magazine clippings as paint brushes, to create portraits or street life images.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the colorful pages that magazines have, even though I never recall myself actually reading one. I was always starring at the illustrations they have. Paper pieces work like the most lively brush strokes. At first glance, they might look irrelevant to each other, but when they come together, all those different shapes and patterns compose the final images. This is the most challenging part for me while making collage.
The number of pieces that I have to put together to create a new piece is not specific. There isn’t a logical way, I have to follow my own way to complete a collage, to see beyond the words on a magazine page, to see them as tones. One collage consists of so many pieces glued together that it takes a lot of time to actually find, but I don’t mind, it’s part of the game. Portraits have always been my favorite subject but lately I have started making collage that capture street view images.”
